How's it going?
So the game launched this morning and i was wondering if everyone was excited like i was. Was pretty cool 2 be one of the first 5 in my sever^^, also was happy 2 that my name wasnt taken. Myself I think that as I play my first char in GW2 which will be a human elementalist, keeping with the tradition from guild wars named Rain of Regret. I will also be looking for any achievements that may not be listed those that might require doing something or another to trigger. If any may exist. There are only 34 more days until the long awaited Guild Wars 2 game is released. Like you were not counting the days yourself. Well another day another platinum. I personally have 25/50 for my Hall of Monuments and am wondering is there anyone out there that is also scrambling for the best that they can get between now and the release. I would really like to find a partner or seven that is interested in grouping together and getting all that we can get done and more by working together... What's the best race and class to be?
I'm new to the GuildWars world and i've already pre-order Guild Wars2. And i have no clue what race or class i want to be. I'd like some some help, for example what race works best with what class. And since I' know 0 people who are planning on playing this game I was wondering what would be best for soloing. So there is everything in a nut shell, also thanks you to anyone who can guide me in some direction.
dealing with inaccurate advice on the wiki
It has been mentioned that it might be better to remove inaccurate advice from mainspace, rather than keeping it.
This would apply probably to most pre-update Dervish advice, and presumably lots of other hints and tips, probably on other professions as well. The affected pages would be guides (e.g. profession guides) and advice on other pages (e.g. notes on skill pages). What else is affected by rising inaccuracy?
Should we delete those pages and notes, or keep them? We could add "out of date" notices to them.
Should we keep backups? For every page, there's a more current one on , and probably on as well, so we don't really have to.
Please post your opinion in the comments so we can decide as a community on what to do.

Hi, I am a Year 11 Preliminary HSC student from New South Wales (Australia) currently studying sub-cultures in Society and Culture. Fictional announcements announced?
Should we announce the fictional announcement on the mainpage with a header or byline (other than the link at the bottom), or not?
My personal opinion is that it sort of spoils the joke if we do; that we're not really misleading because we don't claim that it's a login announcement at all. What do you think? (And should we have a poll on this?)

My biggest career dream is, of course, to once live off my art. But since chances of that happening are very slim and I'm a realist - at least in that regard - I will very soon start a job as a computer dogsboy. IF I understood the boss there correctly. Might be something else entirely... BUT one thing's fo sho: I'll work with computers.
Signature templates
In my quest to eliminate green puzzle pieces in the RTE, I've stumbled on pages like User:Skuld/Sig. There are 243 users with signature templates that I know of (= pages starting with User: and ending in sig or Sig or s/Signature).
- If I substitute these, pages get lots of wikicode dumped on them, but the RTE would probably hide that. For most signatures, anyway.
- I could replace them with plain links to the person's userpage (like the default for new accounts), but that would change their signatures.
This problem gets easier, but does not go away, with the purge of old User talk: pages, because these templates are used elsewhere as well. (Of course I'd like to delete old talk everywhere, but I fear that's not going to get consensus.)

PanSola once made a landscape format skillbox, see e.g. Shield Stance landscape vs. Shield Stance. This looks pretty good now. Do we want to adopt that format?
Actually, we're using that format (or similar) on the quick references (QR).
color bug with merc?
I registered my ele recently; she wears silver-dyed elite Luxon armor, and Vabbian headgear. Turns out neither the armor's color, nor the headgear were shown correctly. Need to look into that...

St Patrick's Day Theme
It's St Patrick's Day, and we're green! This is the test of what we've been trying to achieve over the past month: to make our articles independent of the underlying wiki theme. I changed the Theme using Special:ThemeDesigner, and copied a few colors to MediaWiki:Wikia.css from the resulting .css , and that was it. If you find pages with colors that look off, please report them here.
Oh, and if you have a better suggestion for the background, I'm listening. ;-)
Anonymous contributions?
Just an idea: considering the direction this wiki is going, does it still make sense to allow unregistered users to contribute? From what I've seen lately, many anonymous contributions have been vandalism or little better (no offense to those that meant well). I can see the need for anonymous contributions to an encyclopedic wiki, but I think contributors here have every reason to register at least.

Let's get rid of old user pages!
I've been engaging in some wiki maintenance lately, and I noticed that a lot of maintenance is expended on user pages that haven't been touched for years, with the users presumably gone for good. For example, going through Special:WantedFiles, I found pages like [ this one] that have accumulated half a dozen maintenance edits, but had no real edit for 3 years.
To me, it makes no sense to keep fixing these; if the page is old, if the user is gone, why not delete it and save ourselves the burden of maintenance? To clear the maintenance backlog, I'd have to fix code and images on pages that nobody is ever going to need again; it makes more sense to delete them outright instead of maintaining them again and again.

When I booted up Gw today, the first thing I noticed was that I was downloading a game update. I thaught to myself, hmm wonder what they changed, prolly gonna be a few people a bit upset about it *snigger*. Then... Canthan New Year during the SuperBowl Weekend?
When my 16 yr old said it was the Canthan New Year last weekend, I was very surprised because it was also SuperBowl weekend and my Packers were in the SuperBowl. (And they won!) Why did I think that Canthan New Year was the last weekend in February? And why did ArenaNet let Canhan New Year be the same weekend as the SuperBowl? Needless to say I didn't get to do much :(

It has been suggested that the fanfic section needs guidelines. Please discuss what these guidelines should be. I'll collect guidelines that appear to have consensus in this post.
My new Direction: Simplify
This blog post is an overview of how I see our present situation. I am writing it to explain the thrust of my current initiatives on this wiki. I realize that there are other ways to perceive our situation, and other initiatives that have merit, and I am committed to support anyone in their initiatives. However, this is what drives mine.
The Situation
The GuildWiki community created most of the content on this wiki. Apart from the community shrinking as Guild Wars gets less popular as a game, there were three surges of editors leaving:
- when ArenaNet created wiki.guildwars.com and tied it into the game
- when GuildWiki moved from being hosted by Gravewit to being hosted by Wikia
- when GuildWiki moved from being hosted Wikia to being hosted by curse…
South Africans on GW
Why is it that the South African community on GW seems invisible? I mean if the Polish and the Russians get their own districts on GW, why shouldn't we? Not all of us speak English as our 1st language, although I must admit that a substancial amount do... But there are also alot of us who speak Afrikaans (NO, IT'S NOT DUTCH)... Who would like to be able to talk to one another in our native and proud language wiithout the natives going rampant; as if we're heritics.

Monobook colors
We've been starting some work on making this wiki readable again after the color theme change. Unfortunately, we're running into issues where it's hard to make it look good in both the dark Oasis and the white Monobook skins, and we have to make compromises and work-arounds to avoid "breaking" the page in the other skin. It's increasing the workload on the editors, and in my opinion is bound for failure anyway, unless everything is just bland and limited to a small handful of colors that each must be defined differently between the skins by using classes (See the Sandbox for examples).
What do you think of changing the color theme of Monobook to be closer to the current Oasis colors? It would still be functionally Monobook, but it will make…
Main Page Redesign
We've already changed the old "stack of boxes" design into something more fluid, and "imported" some sidebar features from other wikis.
In general, I'd like to add more "community" features to the page, such as an input box that lets people create articles about their favorite GW web sites or videos. All blog posts in Category:Community blog should be listed someplace prominent, too.
How about relegating the old "List'o'Links" to an "information portal"? Of course, the community portal might be part of this redesign - do we need 3 portals? One for readers to get active, one for editors to use, one for finding stuff?

This place seems pretty much deserted right now. And I'm not seeing any discussions anywhere about what we might do with this whole GW@W thing. We have two other wikis for encyclopedias, and guru probably holds a solid spot for chatter and speculation and that kind of thing, especially given ANet's presence there. So what options are even left? I've seen fanfic come up, but is that it? Also, is anyone even around here, still?

I don't know how I missed all the buzz about "Oasis" coming up but I'm surprised how it snuck up on me. As an old admin and formally a major contributor here, I have to have an opinion on all this. And I do, but I need to think.
But I wanted to get a few things out before everyone goes totally crazy.
- I'm using the new skin now and I don't see ANY ads besides one on the main page. On here or elsewhere on Wikia
- Monobook is not going anywhere as an option for logged in users who set their preferences
- I'd give this look a chance before going soooo extreme and "moving"
- We freaked out over Monaco and got used to that.
- I have concerns too but I wouldn't say this is the end of the world

Good moments of the war in kryta
You know, there are few things that bring a smile to my face, especially since my beloved Domain of anguish has been taken over by the ash-scattering cult of ancestor worship. And these 2 events all happened thru the war in kryta.
1) When lashona came to visit the ascalonian settlement, accusing everyone of being filty royals and such, the fight itself was relatively easy. HOWEVER the true awesomeness was in the 20 peasants with IWAY helping you give the smackdown to lashona. The more they died, the more they became invincible. ANET, if you're reading this, WE WANT MORE IWAY PEASANTS!

War in Kryta: Royal gifts and more
Firstly, thanks Anet for finally giving us something worthwhile to do with the whole War in Kryta thing, I was beginning to give up hope. (No thanks Wikia, who have managed to make WikEd crash my browser on this blog page thing). Anyway, I have collected in my travels a total of 3 gifts, and come to a conclusion. Anet hates me, I'm not sure exactly when this conclusion came about, but - really, they hate me. I can deduce this from the drops I have got from the royal gifts, these are:

Weaponry, storage and other practical war tricks
If you're a warrior, you eventually learn to understand that a warrior and his weapons should not be separated. Sure, you could dedicate an entire bank panel to weapons you've customed and are using, but that's a little impractical. Here is what's in my inventory : multiple types of swords , multiple types of axes, 2 types of hammers , staffs , daggers, spear, scythe, Mallyx longbow (for pulling), 1 extra armorset (radiant) + hammer&KD gauntlets
