Selecting the right license[]

Why use license information?[]

Images are protected under copyright and as such, GWiki abides by the laws. Many images have been uploaded in the past that are a blatant copyright breach and have gone unnoticed. It is easy to just upload copied images from other sources but these images hold GWiki liable as well as it being morally wrong to keep.

Selecting the right license for your image[]

Note: You are not required to upload the image again to add this information, open the image and click the edit button at the top.

First of all you must determine where the image was sourced from.

  • If your image is sourced from another website, you must find their terms and conditions, which is normally found on the very bottom of the page and then select the correct license that they have used. If the image does not cite its terms and conditions, it may be eligible for a Fair-use image tag or a Public domain image tag.
  • If the image is sourced from a guild wars screenshot (any other game screenshots fall under a different copyright and this tag can not be used for them), you may use the Guild Wars screen capture tag. You do not own the copyright for the screenshots and therefore can not change its license, arena net owns the copyright.
  • If the image was created by you or someone that has released it for use on the wiki you may use the User-created image.
  • If the image was sourced from a guild wars released tool kit, you may use the Fansite kit image tag.

Applying a license[]

When you upload an image you must also add some copyright details about the image. When you have selected the most appropriate copyright template to use for your image. Click the edit button at the top on the menu when viewing the image. Copy and paste the template into the text box and change any of the required fields, you do this by replacing the "<source>", "<author>" and so forth with your required value. You may select additional optional fields to include which allows you to over ride or further define your image.

Licenses[]

Fair-use image[]

Minimal requirements:

{{Fair-use image
 |source = <source>
 |author = <author>
 |reasoning = <reason>
}}

Optional fields are used to further define details or write over default values. The following is a list of all optional fields that can be applied to this template. You are not required to add optional fields and you may select one or more to use, to use the default value just omit the row.

{{Fair-use image
 |source = <source>
 |author = <author>
 |reasoning = <reason>
 |usableonuserpage = <optional:is usable on user pages>
 |usernotes = <optional:user notes>
}}

The template includes three required fields, source, author and reasoning. The source is the original location of where the image was found, you should link to the website page that displays the image as some website servers do not allow you to view images unless you have visited their website. The author of the image is the person or organization that holds copyright for that image. The image can not be protected by a login system.

Every fair use image must have a reason to be allowed, if the reasoning is weak the image will be marked to be revised and a new reason must be added within 7 days. When the image is used as a research image, it will not be allowed to be used for recreational reasons anywhere else except when used under Fair-use. Pages that may not include this image must set usableonuserpage to "no". This field is optional and it will default to being allowed to be used by user pages.

User notes are additional notes that can not be included under any of the other fields. By default this field will not show.

Incorrect license details[]

Images that are incorrectly copyrighted are:

  • Images that do not have a copyright template.
  • Images that do not meet the minimum field requirement.
  • Images that do not list the correct copyright details.

Images that do not have the copyright template are to be tagged with {{Unattributed image|~~~~~}}, these will automatically be categorized at Unattributed images.

You must indicate to the image uploader about the copyright breach. This is done by adding to their talk page the following.

{{subst:Image copyright|filename}}

Do not create this template again if there is a copy of it already on their talk page, just append to the list by adding a new image location (eg. *[[:Image:new_image.png]]) before the ~~~~.
