GuildWars Wiki talk:Community Portal/Archive 17/topnotes

The recent vandalism

Is, firstly unacceptable, if it is a sockpuppet of any user here they should be ashamed (not to say it is). The spammer seems to:

  • Create a link using !important before each argument in the span tag
  • Remove from the article, small amounts of content, so it looks like a very minor revision
  • Use a referer URL (url2it.com in this case - i've looked on there site, there seems no clear way to report a bad url to have it removed)

Anything we can do, apart from :D and bear it? RT | Talk 18:21, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Also he uses Position:Absolute. --- VipermagiSig-- (s)talkpage 18:23, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Yeah! RT | Talk 18:23, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Is it still happening in the last few days? And is it also happening on the official wiki or are we the only target? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:48, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't check the Official Wiki. It has happened a few hours (well, 3 hours) ago. It doesnt happen on GW2W for as far as I've seen tho. --- VipermagiSig-- (s)talkpage 21:51, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
What does the vandalism do, anyway? (I've been a bit less active here) Thoughtful 19 (Talk) 21:56, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
It covers the entire page with an invisible external link pointing to bad sites. No matter where you click on the page you get sent there. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:59, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I've added a javascript that should reduce the damage it causes, until the bad guys catch on and invent something new. In the mean while, the javascript *might* break some fancy legitimate use of external link formatting. Please report any such occurrences. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 21:59, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
And I've no doubt they've protected their own page with it. I don't see how it's possible to cause whatever they've caused. Thoughtful 19 (Talk) 22:01, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Ignorance is bliss. I don't want GuildWiki to turn into the Academy for Advanced Vandalism Techniques. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:04, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Something similar (or identical) was tested over here. I also looked at the HTML of the page and found probable causes why a couple of elements weren't covered (see the talk page) --Gimmethegepgun 22:05, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I've missed these vandalisms, what does "absolute" do? Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 22:29, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

It makes the positioning of the element measured with respect to the entire page, as opposed to it's immediate container. This is how it's range/size can cover the entire page. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:33, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Actually, "absolute" makes it relative to the container. "fixed" makes it relative to the page. "relative" (default) makes it relative to the current position of the element. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:45, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
.........OK, so it makes it cover the page. OK then.Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 00:05, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Except the GuildWiki logo, the navigation bar on the side (just the one, not all the boxes), the search box, and the tabs on top --Gimmethegepgun 00:29, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Skill templates

What happened to the "edit skill details" button? Cress Arvein(Talk) 00:57, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Ummm... it seems like <span style="plainlinks"></span> isn't working --Gimmethegepgun 01:02, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Also, I first noticed something strange in the statistics page, the job queue link disappeared. Regular external links appear to work, but plainlinks isn't --Gimmethegepgun 01:07, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Just was going to post that. The main page link to PvX and Gw2wiki are gone (they are in the code, but aren't showing up). Cress Arvein(Talk) 01:08, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
And I just found something very strange. Check out my sandbox and look at the code. Before, only the pure external (no plainlinks) one showed up, but now for some reason... uhh just look at it. Also try removing either one of the spans and see what happens --Gimmethegepgun 01:13, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I'd guess it's due to Pan's changes to the Common.js --Gimmethegepgun 01:17, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
On Internet Explorer, the links show up :/ Cress Arvein(Talk) 01:19, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I guess that's because IE is such EpicPhailTM that the changes to the Common.js won't work on it --Gimmethegepgun 01:22, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Also all the links on the Ban template are fucked --Gimmethegepgun 01:25, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
After purging cache that seems to have fixed it --Gimmethegepgun 01:28, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
Back to normal again, I guess. Cress Arvein(Talk) 01:30, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Long loading and time-outs

GuildWiki is awfully slow today. Also I get time outs like every 4th click within GuildWiki. What does that cause? It's a pain to add stuff like that. Other pages work just fine. LOL even got an error after I clicked Save here ;_; *grrrr* I'm no person with much patience :P 2nd time-out *sigh*, wonder if I'll be ever able to post this comment... 3rd with new error: The requested URL could not be retrieved --Birchwooda Treehug 20:49, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

FFXI and EQ2 are upgrading to 1.12 right now. Depending on how many new bugs get discovered, so I'm guessing it might be our turn sometime next week or the week after (the more bugs, the later). -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 04:10, 1 February 2008 (UTC)

Semantic MediaWiki

The Semantic MediaWiki is an extension currently undergoing testing on Wikia, and I think it can be useful on GuildWiki. The testing site on Wikia's installation of SMW is here. Official documentation of SMW can be found here. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:01, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

As long as it works with wikied, it's probably fine RT | Talk 22:04, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
What I mean by that is, I don't realy understand the document, but if it works with my editor extention (Called wikied) it's probably fine RT | Talk 22:05, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Admittedly only had a brief read through some of the features / examples, but agree that some of those features could be very handy for GuildWiki. One question-mark though, what sort of impact is it likely to have on the servers, infrastructure etc? Ie, all that additional syntax structuring etc will surely come at some extra server resources usage cost? Will Wikia accommodate that? --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 03:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Semantic MediaWiki, if I am not mistaken, is MUCH better than DPL at performing similar tasks (which is currently deployed on standard Wikia installations, and we'll probably get DPL once we upgrade to 1.12). Wikia is currently testing it, which means looking for bugs or any subtle corner cases of huge resource drain, and if it passes the tests, then it will be available to all Wikia wikis (may not necessarily be automatically on by default). I believe it would be generally desirable in terms of resource consumption to convert any applicable usage of DPL into Semantic MediaWiki. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 07:43, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Ahhh, very cool. Anything that can enhance performance is a good thing, and if it can give us some neat new features as part of the bargin, all the better! --Wolfie Wolfie sig (talk|contribs) 23:13, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
At first glance, I thought this was called "Semitic MediaWiki." I was nearly horrified. Felix Omni Signature 23:16, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
Some answers from the developers:
  • SMW can indeed be used in many ways – be creative! (In the gaming context, e.g., you could realise DB like functions as offered by http://thottbot.com/ as part of the wiki, while still having normal wiki pages; you can also make something like a wiki-based blog or a multi-lingual documentation (scroll down for other languages))
  • Performace impact of advanced queries depends on the query and data; Wikia might configure SMW to allow only queries of limited complexity to prevent server overload
  • Compatibility with other extensions is important to us, please report any problems and we will try to fix them (see http://semantic-mediawiki.org on how to report bugs/wishes and where to get support)
  • The extended syntax can be hidden in templates, if desired (I think http://discoursedb.org is a good example for that)

Cress Arvein

Umm, is there something going on with Cress Avin? I was pressing the Shield and Swords and [[ ]] so many times that it eventually borught me to Cress Arvein's page.--Spam King SigSpamKing 18:10, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

I have no clue what "pressing the Shield and Swords and [[ ]] " is referring to, so can't really help you there. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 22:02, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Skill color-code

A proposal at GuildWiki_talk:Style_and_formatting/Skills#Color_code_for_PvE-Only_Skills may have major effect on the looks of a significant number of articles. Please take a look and comment if you care about the issue. -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 09:33, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

You guys know that a lack of response means a free license for me to do whatever I want and you'll never get to complain right? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 02:16, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm fine with it, provided I don't have to edit the icons. Felix Omni Signature 02:21, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
I like the idea, and for Elite PvE skills, how about half of the border silver, and the other half gold, either in the middle of the picture or the middle of the border going around. Thoughtful 19 02:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
The problem I see in this is that some random person is going to come here looking up a skill that they just got in-game, and see a gray border on it, and wonder wtf is that supposed to mean??. It's not like it's in the game like the elite skill borders, where people can identify them with.--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 02:24, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
So let's think about how to easily provide the answer to the question wtf is that supposed to mean?? -User:PanSola (talk to the Follower of Lyssa) 02:28, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
Just add a small note to all pve-only articles: "This skill is displayed as any normal skill in-game." Felix Omni Signature 02:30, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
The gold border isn't the same as the actual icon in game. Put a border around all the skills. DIfferent colors for different things: Kurz/Lux, PvE, etc. —JediRogue 02:34, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
It may not be the same, but it's very similar, and it represents the same thing. IMO, unless we can somehow make people understand what the gray border means at a first glance, I don't really see the point in it.--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 02:35, 22 February 2008 (UTC)
I think on Quick References, it already has seperate sections for them. It would be a lot easier and less confusing to just add something to the skill boxes that says something like "PvE spell" than changing the icons.Entrea SumataeEntrea Sumatae [Talk] 02:37, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Skill Archives?

Is there any way to see the old versions of skills here on Wiki? I was trying to remember exactly what a few skills looked like before nerfs over the past 2 years. Zuranthium 10:28, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Skills descriptions are done in templates, where the history of all old versions are. Simply click the edit skill details above the skills image on its page and view that history. --AlariSig 10:33, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Possible new quick reference

I have been trying to research to make a good dervish build myself. Since most of dervish's energy management (mysticism) revolves around losing enchantments, I think there should be a quick reference for all the enchantments that give positive benefits when they end. --Voidvector 16:54, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Skins Information in Unique Weapon Template

I look over unique item pages all the time, as I think many others do as well. It occurred to me that almost all of these unique weapons and offhands are reskins of existing common/rare items, and the skin is always mentioned in the article either at the top or under a notes section. Since this is clearly useful information that applies to every single green drop, I propose that we add a line in the template under "Dropped by:" saying (for example) "Skin: Suntouched Scythe" or "Skin: Unique" as appropriate. Obviously, I have no desire to make the weapon template large and unwieldy, but since this information is on every single green item page, I think this will serve to make the information easier to find, as it willbe in a standard position. Thoughts? --Hashmir 19:07, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I think it's a good idea, but it will be a lot of work to fix every single unique item page--Marcopolo47 signature new (Talk) (Contr.) 19:12, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I think I have it. Starting monk items now. --Shadowcrest 19:50, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
How would you specify if it that skinned but dyed?--AlariSig 19:58, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm just putting [[weapon skin]] dyed <color> --Shadowcrest 20:13, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, I'm putting "Unique (except for other <br>unique items)" for things like Ssuns' Staff, and PvP reward for pvp reward staff skins. --Shadowcrest 20:26, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, please make sure you remove redundant notes. --Shadowcrest 20:29, 18 March 2008 (UTC)
Starting Dervish weapons.
Hey, my idea was liked and executed. I feel cool now. XD Anyway, I'm going through the warrior weapons and just moving the info from notes sections. For space reasons, I've elected to use "Ungula Axe dyed green" format for clear dye jobs, while just saying "Stygian Reaver" for special colors, such as Axe of the Kinslayer." If someone has a better convention for special colors, I'll go back through and change them, but I find that anything more detailed stretches the box, defeating the purpose. --Hashmir 00:24, 19 March 2008 (UTC)'
I just said "Suntouched Spear uniquely dyed" for things like Droknar's Spear. --Shadowcrest 16:58, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I said "with unique coloring" for Drok's bows. Felix Omni Signature 17:00, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
