Contrary to popular belief, Mayor Alegheri's death does not boot your party from the Underworld. He does not die, as he is neutral to all monsters. It is when all other Tortured Spirits around him die that a party is booted.
His name is presumably an allusion to Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet who wrote "The Divine Comedy", including "Inferno", a description of a descent into Hell.
