A Morale Boost is a temporary positive boost to your Health and Energy of a fixed percentage. Every time you earn a morale boost, all skills and signets are instantly recharged (including the Resurrection Signet) and the amount is added to your current total; this amount cannot exceed +10%. A Morale Boost is the opposite of a Death Penalty, although both are added together for a cumulative effect.

Note: The terms "morale boost" and "death penalty" are also used to describe whether this cumulative effect is positive or negative.

PvE

Morale boosts in PvE are generally gained in 2% increments. Morale boosts in PvE are earned by:

PvP

Morale boosts in PvP come in 10% increments and can be earned through the following methods:

  • Note: Killing an opposing guild member in a guild battle will remove 2% death penalty but will not provide a boost above 0%.

Removal

  • When a player is killed, a death penalty of 15% is applied to the character. As the maximum morale boost is 10%, this will totally remove any boost, leaving the character with a 5% death penalty.
  • Using map travel or leaving an explorable area for a staging area removes all effects -- including any morale boost/death penalty.
  • Candy Canes, which were available during the Wintersday event in 2005, reset the character's death penalty to 0%. They do not erase morale boost.

Notes

  • When a team wins a map in Heroes' Ascent, each player will keep any morale boost he or she has, but will be relieved of any penalty.
  • In every PvP arena in the game, with the exception of those in Heroes' Ascent, you cannot gain any morale boosts, but you can suffer from death penalty except The Crag arena, and the Alliance Battles.
  • Morale boost & death penalty are not removed when the character travels between explorable areas, as enchantments are.
