Usage Notes

Usage is straighforward: watch for an enemy to start casting a spell, then cast this to stop them in their tracks and cut their energy pool down. If you would rather deal them some damage when countering spells take a look at the sister-skill Power Spike.

Countering skills is tough at first, but once you get the hang of it interrupts will prove an effective part of your arsenal. It sometimes helps to have played the other spell casting classes so that you are familiar with their casting animations. When opponents are casting spells the skill name will appear under their names if you have them selected, but beware of depending on this because that skill will be displayed under their names long after your opportunity to counter has gone.

In a PvP match this is especially useful to prevent Monks from getting that last minute heal off to save their tank. Interrupt that critical heal and you may force them to try a Restore Life instead of a simple heal, not to mention that they will have less energy after your counter and so be slower to heal in the immediate future.

In PvE the same applies, although the skill is less commonly used.

  • This spell is especially useful for a Shutdown Mesmer, as it both interrupts a spell and drains a large amount of energy compared to the low, but guaranteed, drains of Energy Tap or Energy Drain.
