I've seen Aidan here at the point where you kill the boss, but he's always surrounded by the Ettins, and dies before I can reach him. Does anyone know if he's even rescuable, and if so, does he give another quest?

Even though Sugar Rush is town-based only.
Saving him is finally possible now with hench-flagging. Send your heroes/henches to Aidan's spawning location before Aidan and the ettins spawn. (I found the basic idea on one of the pet pages, it shows how you can rob a boss' pet by using the same technique.)
As soon as the quest boss is killed, he will speak to the player and start running to the Traveler's Vale exit. He will disappear after entering the portal. There were no additional quests. Did this with a N/R.
